Examining the Multiple Trajectories Associated with Dropping Out of High School: A Growth Mixture Model Analysis

    Get PDF
Historically, students who fail to graduate from secondary school are considered as a single category of school dropouts. However, emerging literature indicates that there may be multiple subgroups of high school dropouts, termed a dropout typology. The authors’ purpose was to assess the extent to which a typology of dropouts was present in a large national dataset and to estimate the influence of the known covariates of dropping out on each of the subgroups. A growth mixture model was estimated using the Education Longitudinal Study 2002 (National Center for Education Statistics, n.d.) dataset and noncumulative grade point average during the first 3 semesters of high school. The model identified 2 main subgroups associated with dropping out, which accounted for 24.6% of the sample but contained 91.8% of the dropouts

Why Tenth Graders Fail to Finish High School: A Dropout Typology Latent Class Analysis

    Get PDF
A large percentage of the students who drop out of K-12 schools in the United States do so at the end of high school, at some point after grade 10. Yet we know little about the differences between different types of students who drop out of the end of high school. The purpose of this study is to examine a typology of high school dropouts from a large nationally representative dataset (ELS:2002) using latent class analysis (LCA). We found three significantly different types of dropouts; Quiet, Jaded, and Involved. Based on this typology of three subgroups, we discuss implications for future dropout intervention research, policy, and practice

Intranasal Immunization with an Archaeal Lipid Mucosal Vaccine Adjuvant and Delivery Formulation Protects against a Respiratory Pathogen Challenge

Archaeal lipid mucosal vaccine adjuvant and delivery (AMVAD) is a safe mucosal adjuvant that elicits long lasting and memory boostable mucosal and systemic immune responses to model antigens such as ovalbumin. In this study, we evaluated the potential of the AMVAD system for eliciting protective immunity against mucosal bacterial infections, using a mouse model of intranasal Francisella tularensis LVS (LVS) challenge. Intranasal immunization of mice with cell free extract of LVS (LVSCE) adjuvanted with the AMVAD system (LVSCE/AMVAD) induced F. tularensis-specific antibody responses in sera and bronchoalveolar lavage fluids, as well as antigen-specific splenocyte proliferation and IL-17 production. More importantly, the AMVAD vaccine partially protected the mice against a lethal intranasal challenge with LVS. Compared to LVSCE immunized and naĂŻve mice, the LVSCE/AMVAD immunized mice showed substantial to significant reduction in pathogen burdens in the lungs and spleens, reduced serum and pulmonary levels of proinflammatory cytokines/chemokines, and longer mean time to death as well as significantly higher survival rates (p<0.05). These results suggest that the AMVAD system is a promising mucosal adjuvant and vaccine delivery technology, and should be explored further for its applications in combating mucosal infectious diseases

In 1934 Angus and Robertson, the Sydney publishers, issued an engaging memoir, 'Buffaloes', a book now described as a "Classic Australian True Story", a record of the post-war adventures of two young Australian ex-servicemen, Carl Warburton (b. 1893) and Lawrence Whittaker (b. 1894), the latter an English migrant serving with Australian units. The first was the author of the text. They had met first behind the lines on Gallipoli in 1915, and had resolved to do something audaciously different, should they survive hostilities. At that postwar meeting the toss of a coin determined that the adventure should be in the Northern Territory rather than Brazil. The author is an elusive figure as far as the standard literary histories are concerned, although Morris Miller had in 1940 listed Warburton's later novel, White Poppies (1937), the text of which is discussed now by John Mulvaney in his 'Foreword' to the new edition. The purpose of the latter - and of the present editors - is to contextualise a book which is still sui genesis, despite an earlier wartime reprint. It had been titled 'Life and Adventures in Arnhem Land'
